Instagram Gives the Internet a New Filter

First of all, sorry I’ve been out of commission for a while. Between work and family matters, I let this site fall by the wayside a little bit. Fortunately, we’re back in business now.

Today, we’ll take a look at the increasing role Instagram is playing in modern popular culture. Once a lightly-used application used by a few people to add fancy filters to their photos, Instagram is now commonplace among many social media users.

Equipped with 3G and 4G smartphones, everyone from average teenagers to grown up celebrities are adding sepia-toned effects to their mobile photos. It’s even reached the elusive level of being used as a verb (hey man, you should totally Instagram that picture!).

This is one of many technological innovations that make many people shake their heads. What seems like not that long ago, people were amazed that cellular phones could even take pictures in the first place. Then, we were able to not only share pictures between phones, but actually post pictures directly online from a phone.

Instagram takes it that one extra step: you can take a picture with your cell phone, post it directly to a social media site, and add a professional-looking effect, all from your phone!

Mobile Internet allows us to do some truly amazing things. While Instagram may not have the societal impact of some innovations, it is certainly sweeping rapidly across the online landscape!
