Top Ten: 3G Mobile Phones

1. Sony Ericsson W900i: This is the first 3G Walkman phone, and while its storage capacity can’t match the Nokia N91, its system for transferring music from PC to phone is extremely simple, playback is strong and the handset’s rotating front is effective. Bulky, but recommended.

2. Nokia N91: This is the real music-lover’s phone. It has a 4GB hard drive so you can take the phone and leave your iPod at home. Sound quality is extremely good, adding tracks is straightforward and if there’s a fault it’s that the phone is not exactly tiny. Out next month.

3. Samsung i300: This phone comes with a 3GB hard drive so you can store a lot of music or photographs on board. That’s enough for 1,000 tracks which you can transfer easily from your Windows PC. The camera on board is 1.3 megapixel – decent rather than exceptional.

4. Samsung Z320i: One of the first 3G phones to feature i-mode, the one-button link to a mobile internet service which offers news, downloads, e-mail and easy ways of checking cinema times or buying flowers, say. The phone is also small, cute and powerful.

5. Samsung Z540: This tiny phone from Samsung is a real head-turner. You can use it to stream video clips, make video calls and transfer data at almost broadband speeds, and it also has a 1.3-megapixel camera and plenty of memory for photos. Just out.

6. Nokia 6280: This 3G slider from Nokia has a huge screen, a 2-megapixel camera and strong video-recording capabilities. The sliding mechanism has a slight spring-assisted movement, which is great. As with all Nokias, it’s a cinch to operate and it looks good, too.

7. Nokia N70: At first, Nokia wasn’t the major player in 3G phones. Now it’s making up for it with a series of striking and feature-packed phones. This all-rounder is easy to use (Nokia’s super-accessible operating system sees to that) and looks great.

8. Samsung Z500: The Z500 is the quintessential clamshell. It’s easy to see why Sam-sung has come to pre-eminence so quickly: its handsets are stylishly designed, do the job well and have added extras such as huge amounts of memory (50MB in this case).

9. Motorola V3x : Motorola’s hugely popular V3 fashion phone was one of the big successes of last year, and this is the 3G version. It adds a more powerful camera, a better screen and the video streaming and fast data capabilities of 3G mobiles. Not as slim as the V3, but still stylish.

10. LG U880: Proof that 3G phones don’t have to be monsters, this sleek model from Korean electronics company LG is quirky, unusual and terrific. It slips into the pocket easily, and the 2-megapixel camera is good for taking pictures or making video calls.

So, which one do you like? [3G!]
