Malaysia’s Maxis to invest RM2b on 3G

Malaysia's biggest mobile firm, Maxis Communications Bhd, will spend a total of RM2.2 billion over the next three years to expand its third generation (3G) network and wireless broadband Internet services. The company expects a break- even period of about three years. Maxis aims to make broadband available to three quarters of all households by 2010. At the end of June, there were more than 650,000 broadband subscribers. Chief executive officer Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim said plans are to invest RM1.5 billion for the next three years, starting in 2007, to expand 3G coverage to more than 60 per cent of the population by 2009. Vietnam’s 3G to be licenced in 2007

Vietnam will follow its ASEAN partners to launch 3G services. The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) is checking technical standards to prepare for the issuance of a regulation on using frequency bands for the 3G network. The MPT plans to issue a business licence to the first firm that meets conditions to offer 3G services next year. Doan Quang Hoan, Director of MPT’s Wireless Frequency Department, revealed that the policy on licencing 3G network services had been considered for a long time. Globe Telecom in Philippines deploys Nokia MSC Server

Mobile softswitch ideal to combine 2G and 3G services. Nokia has signed a nationwide supply contract with the Philippine telecommunications company Globe Telecom Inc. This network modernization deal includes an upgrade of the Globe Telecom circuit switched core network, also enabling fixed mobile convergence. Under the agreement Nokia will renew the core network of Globe Telecom including the upgrade of Nokia mobile switching centre into Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch. Included are also the unique, multitechnology Nokia NetAct(TM) network and service management solution, Nokia Voice over IP Server, and Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Cellular Reaches 2,5 Billion Lines

Geekzone reported a very interesting statictic on cellular industry milestones. Mobile phone industry has become a spectacular industry: it took 20 years to reach 1 billion connections, three years to reach 2 billion connections and is on target to reach its third billion in a period of just over two years.
