China plays fair over 3G standard

In the development of China's 3G licence strategy, the involvement of foreign telecoms companies has been uncertain as the government is seemingly plumping for a homegrown standard. Now the country's Ministry of Information Industry has said the licenses will be technology-neutral. According to reports in the Chinese press, the Ministry is considering established flavors of 3G alongside its own version, TD-SCDMA. Xi Guohua, a vice minister at the Ministry of Information Industry, told the Shanghai Daily: "We will treat W-CDMA and CDMA-2000 equally. It has nothing to do with supporting a locally developed standard." W-CDMA is traditionally favored in Europe and CDMA-2000 is used in the United States. Source: ZDNet

Huawei completes WiMAX trials in Japan

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, announced that it has successfully completed two trials of its end-to-end Mobile WiMAX solution for Reinan Cable Network Co., Ltd and Beam Planning Corporation in Japan . The trials were carried out in cooperation with Fujikura, a manufacturer of power and communication cables. The trials are regarded as an important step in the u-JAPAN Plan, which is a Japanese government initiative to realize seamless broadband coverage throughout Japan by 2010. Japanese cable operators, such as RCN, selected WiMAX technology for its large coverage footprint and high capacity, which also will help solve the broadband access problem in the regions with low broadband coverage. The Huawei WiMAX solution uses leading technologies, such as MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access), to ensure higher flux and comprehensive coverage in those regions.

India’s 3G policy might be announced soon

The Indian government might announce their much awaited 3G policy soon. This is now possible as the defense ministry has agreed to vacate 40 MHz spectrum by July. Opening of the 3G market in India would enable the mobile service providers to launch high-speed data download and interactive services like video gaming and stock trading. Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary DS Mathur said in a statement: “The 3G policy will come very soon hopefully by the month-end.” Source: Sifybroadband
