Korean’s KT goes global

As the domestic penetration dense up, operators may think to expand its business opportunities abroad. Korean largest telecom operator, KT, opens the road on expanding its business. KT CEO Nam Joong-soo says that the firm aims to build a “Silk Road” of the digital era with its broadband and mobile network technology.

Mr. Nam said his firm hopes to build a digital silk road that stretches from Korea, across Russia’s Far East to Europe, and all the way to Africa, connecting people through the Internet and mobile telecommunication technology.

Currently KT holds shares of Russian company, New Telecom. Next, KT bought Uzbek provider East Telecom, landline phone network provider, and Super iMax, local Internet service provider. Uzbekistan is emerging as a very strategic place as it is the most populous nation in Central Asia with 26.5 million people, yet only 60,000 Uzbeks subscribe to Internet services.

Next expansion is to Kazakhstan and Rwanda. Under the agreement, KT will help Rwanda build mobile Internet infrastructure and launch WiBro service in the country’s capital Kigali by November 2008.
