TD-SCDMA: China Mobile vs Qualcomm

This is The CECT G100. TD-SCDMA enabled carriers. So cute isn’t she?

Do you know how much such a giant country like China would pay Qualcomm and Co’s for the standard 3G technology license (WCDMA and CDMA-2000)? Nop. So do I. But I bet it will be so big to imagine. And so big that make (force) Chinese want to made their own.

Since yesterday (April 1st 2008), China government via China Mobile had started a historical moment when they dare enough to issued 20.000 phones and 5000 data cards with TD-SCDMA technology inside to be tested in eight cities; Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Qinhuangdao.

Anyway, those huge number of handsets wasn’t for free. Users still have to pay for it but not in an ordinary price; the phone will be discounted by 100 to 200 yuan and users will get a 50 percent discount on phone charges.

About 11 manufacturer had agree to produce carriers for this technology, including Nokia and Motorola.

If this test work well, China will even more powerful in the area of industry and technology since they don’t need to pay such bills for the foreigner.

However, Chinese news reported that China Mobile is actually reluctant to use TD-SCDMA because it seems doesn’t work as well as the global standard. And government, they can only be a catalyst but not ….. something like that (wish you know what I mean).

Personally, just in my opinion;

The future of a technology will depend on the users. If users love it, it will survive and evolve. But if it isn’t, it will considered to join the deadpool. Yeah …. no doubt about that.
