Ericsson won SmarTone-Vodafone’s contract
Stockholm-based famous technology company Ericsson, has been selected to become the sole supplier for SmarTone-Vodafone’s three years contract started on April 3, 2008. Ericsson will responsible to provide the Hongkong’s number 4th mobile phone operator with all kind of these things:
- Setup and maintaining a HSPA-enabled (High Speed Packet Access) radio access network, including Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS), a functionality that enables mobile-TV services to be broadcast.
- The deal also includes a fully IP-based core network, including IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch Solution, and Redback’s SmartEdge routers.
- Network design
- Systems integration
- Spare parts management service
- Support services
- Network deployment and integration.
What all these things really mean for SmarTone-Vodafone users anyway? SDA-India describe it very well here:
The upgrade to HSDPA enables SmarTone-Vodafone to deliver true broadband speed of up to 1.8 Mbps to laptops. Users will be able to download five times faster than the current 3G connection using existing PC-cards, and 20 times faster than with a GSM/GPRS connection.
This story remind us with Huawei & Mobily agreement a couple days ago. Accidentally, what Arabian Mobily wanted from Chinese Huawei might be the same with what Hong Kong wants from Sweden. What is that? The enhancement of their 3G-based multimedia service whether it is Video, Mobile TV, Music, Internet, etc.
Now SmarTone-Vodafone’s users will ready for this gadget!
The future of 3G in Asia would even more bright with this trend since more and more network operator open a deal with technology vendors to enhance their multimedia service. Viva 3G and 3GWeek!
