South Korean cellphone makers invade Japan
Pantech’s 3G slider W61PT for Japan market.
Samsung, LG, and Pantech had decided to double their sales in the Japanese market by taking a chance coming with the change of the Japanese market. Wow, this is a good news for global free trade supporters.
There are two factors, at least that causing this strong invasion. First, because NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest network operator want those cellphone providers to create handsets with cutting-edge technology yet without its basic OS. Perhaps because they want to inject their handset with their own OS and firmware. Second, since most of Japanese samurai itself i.e. Sony Ericsson, Mitsubishi, and Sanyo had decided to reduced or withdrew their mobile phone manufacturing business in their homeland.
Samsung’s target
The world’s second largest cellphone maker choose to weigh their brand name in Japan rather than struggling to increase their cellphone sales volume. Personally, this is a logical reason I think since Samsung is the youngest Korean in Japan compared to LG or Pantech. By weighing on its brand name, they will have an access and chance to sell more products in the next years.

LG’s target
The world’s fifth largest mobile phone manufacturer want to double their 2007 sales volume from about 350.000 to 700.000 handsets. This number comes only from their contract with NTT DoCoMo. So if LG can find other network operator than DoCoMo, chances are that they can even increase that 700.000 target. To fulfilled this target, LG has set their best-selling Chocolate Series to attract Japanese consumers.

Pantech’s target
The not-so-popular cellphone maker in global market Pantech is surprisingly the Korean eldest player here. Plus, they are now the Japan’s second largest cellphone maker after Sharp. Nowadays, they had sold about 800.000 handsets in 2007.
This year, Pantech want to increase this number up to 20%. They try to fulfill this ambition by supplying KDDI with their 3G slider; W61PT.

Why it isn’t. I think every country have their own character and adoration. In case for Japan, those South Korean probably realize that they could penetrate this market with their high-profile gadget yet with fancy color too.
Go Korea Go!
