Analysis on RIM vs Indian Government case

This is the serial post on the fable about RIM versus the Indian government.

In March 12, I wrote about the trigger of this serial. The point actually very simple. What Indian government really want here is that RIM would let them to access all messages that run on the RIM’s server. They were just afraid if terrorist, militants and criminals would abused this technology to threaten India national security.

Well, at the other side, RIM, in the name of security itself again and again had rejected that request since it will harming their legal standard. Just like the Indian government, seems that RIM also have a simple reason to be told. They technically do not allow any third party - even the company itself - to read information sent over its networks.

What’s next?

If we compared to South Korean-Blackberry case, there is a little chance that RIM will succumb on this issue. In South Korea, local government had finally let those foreigner corporate-based users (most of them are investors), to use their lovely Blackberry after they forced government to do so. However, issue in South Korea was not directly related to security yet more on a firmware standard i.e WIPI vs Blackberry OS. A lower risk issue than this Indian one.

At this moment, There are only about 115,000 Blackberry customers in India. A very small quantity if we compared to the magnificent 261.09 million Indian mobile subscribers. Anyway, Blackberry customers are used to have a different sense of feeling with their own gadget compared to other customers. A feeling that may take them to defend their right to use Pearl or Curve anywhere and everywhere they like. Dare Indian Blackberry customers sue their government on this case? We’ll see …
