Gartner’s Q1 2008 report on smartphone

So, who’s the number one contestant in the league of smartphone in this Q1 2008? Is it RIM with their Blackberry, Apple with the iPhone giga-hyped, or perhaps Nokia with their N and E Series? Let see the quick report from Gartnerhere.

1. Nokia

The Finnish has sold out about 14,588,600 smartphone in this Q1. Jumped 25.3% from the same quarter in 2007. Anyway, The market share had dropped down to 45.2% from 46.7%.

2. Research In Motion

The Canadian has sold out 4,311,814 units of Smartphone. Smaller than Nokia but this only 4 million is similar to a 107.3% increasing from the Q1 2007. Crazy! It seems to be pretty weird though since RIM doesn’t have cellphone but smartphone. lol. Could you tell me a cellphone from RIM that do not categorized as a smartphone? No you can’t!

Who is the best Canadian in USA? Blackberry!

3. Apple

The most innovative company in 2008 has sold out about 1,725,300 iPhone in a year. Hmm, that’s not to bad. In their country, Apple is in the second place after RIM with 20% market share. We should keep in touch with the Apple’s resurrection in Q2 and forward since they will officially spread the iPhone to other countries in four different continents (Africa and Antarctic is not included yet). Hurry up Steve, HTC is up and running!

4. Sharp

1,323,800 units of smartphone has been sold by this Japanese. Note that Sharp is almost like Apple which gain their strongest market share in their own country. Unlike other vendors, Sharp had experiencing a significant reduction compared to the Q1 in 2007, a 24% decrease. I got a bad feeling about this.

5. Fujitsu

A not-so-popular player, Fujitsu has saved about 1,317,500 units of smartphone into their fans. They hold up a 4.1% in market share. This is a positive trend compared to 1,247,200 units they had sold in Q1 2007.

Question?

Hey Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, where are you guys?

Conclusion

Beating Nokia in term of market share is a very very hard problem to be solved. It is just similar like Microsoft in term of Operating System or Google in term of Search or even Yahoo in term of page views.
