Is iPhone 3G really “cheap”?
All we know about iPhone 3G price is “only” US$ 199 for 8 GB and US$ 299 for 16 GB. Quite cheap, huh? Did you know we have to sign two years contract with AT&T (if you are happened to live in the US) to grab the device? So, what is actual cost of having this brand new Apple toys? Is iPhone 3G is as cheap as they claim?
Here is the scheme for unlimited access:
- Basic iPhone 3G 8 GB price: US$ 199
- Unlimited 3G data: US$ 30 / month
- Unlimited individual voice plan: US$ 99.99 /month
- Unlimited SMS: US$ 30 / month
So, if you want to have your own iPhone 3G 8 GB for 2 years contract with unlimited voice plan, 3G data, and SMS, we need to pay US$ 199 + 24 * US$ 159.99 or as I count, the grand total after 2 years is US$ 4,038.76!
What about minimum usage scheme? Since basic individual voice plan package includes free 200 SMS per month, here is the minimum plan scheme:
- Basic iPhone 3G 8 GB: US$ 199
- Individual voice plan: US$ 39.99 for 450 minutes / month (including free 200 SMS / month)
- Unlimited 3G data: US$ 30 / month (can’t get lower than this)
In total we need to spend US$ 199 + 24 * US$ (39.99 + 30) = US$ 1878.76 after 2 years!
Since it is 2 years contract means to you need to spend all of that before fully grab your lovely new iPhone 3G. Still think that iPhone 3G is cheap? I think it is cheaper if you can jailbreak it
