DoCoMo focuses on expanding their business overseas
As the penetration of mobile phone usage has reached 85% of population (or 108 millions subscribers), DoCoMo, the largest mobile operator in Japan is trying to expand their business by looking for opportunities overseas. Ryuji Yamada, the new President and CEO said, “our No. 1 priority is the Asia-Pacific region, then the Middle East and Africa.”
DoCoMo recently announced that they will take 30% share of Bangladesh’s Aktel. Aktel is third largest operator in the country. This move following the previous steps of DoCoMo investment in Malaysia’s U Mobile and stake increase in Philippines Long Distance Telephone.
Besides overseas investment, DoCoMo also pay attention closely to the sales of iPhone 3G on July 11 by their rival, Softbank. DoCoMo still has not given up on the possibility of their side to sell iPhone 3G too (along with Softbank). Yet, DoCoMo claim that iPhone 3G is lack of TV capability and electronic money payment, a common service offered by Japan operator.
We’ll wait for what DoCoMo have to offer next in the tight rivalry against their competitors which currently resulted DoCoMo’s big loss in market share.
