Japan: mobile phone calls finally beat fixed phone calls
Probably this is the beginning of the deteriorating of fixed phone calls. For the first time ever, mobile phone calls usage beat fixed phone calls usage. The situation occurred in Japan, where mobile phone penetration has reached mature condition.
Government report said the use of fixed phone calls is only 49.7%, compared to 50.3% of mobile phone calls usage. The timeframe was between April 2006 to March 2007. It was full one year of period. When text messaging is taken into account, the situation will be a landslide for mobile phone usage.
Keiichi Takenaka, officer at Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication said, “”We assume mobile phones will be the mainstream in the future. Look at how often people exchange messages on mobile phones rather than actually talking, because messages take just a click and cost less.”
Another statistics revealed:
Existing fixed-line phone accounts fell 5 percent to 55 million in fiscal 2006, compared with 117 million mobile phone subscriptions, an increase of 5.4 percent.
