Nokia S40 6th edition: what is new?
Following the launching of several Supernova phones, Nokia also introduced their 6th edition of S40 User Interface. Sixth edition already? I knew nothing about the fourth or the fifth or whatever, but this new User Interface bring quite improvement to the most popular non-smartphone operating system.
Although it has no multitasking and native programming model, S40 is used by many more people than S60 since it is faster and easier to navigate. Here are the list of what S40 6th edition has, compared to its predecessor:
- Support for MIDP 2.1
- Support for JSR 248 (Mobile Service Architecture)
- Support for JSR 179 (Location API for J2ME)
- Improved support to Adobe Flash developers with the inclusion of the Flash Lite 3 Player
- New browser for desktop-like Web browsing experience
- Enhanced UI with transitions support providing smooth-state transitions during UI navigation
- Additional audio and video codecs with support for Windows Media Video (WMV) 9, and Windows Media Audio (WMA) 10
- Extended WLAN capabilities
- Support for OMA MMS 1.3
Complete information can be obtained in this S40 FAQ [document in PDF].
