Yesterday, UV reported that the big Korean Samsung had donated 1000 handsets to 600 athletes and 400 coaches and staff for the Chinese Olympic Team. Fortunately, the handset is not an ordinary one. Yet it is a Samsung G618 with a special olympic ringtone and photos inside of its internal memory.

But that won’t be such a free lunch for Chinese. As an exchange, Samsung will have an authority to use Chinese athletes photos for their future ads. Yummy, just remember about the relation between Samsung and Chelsea!

I think this is such a cool CSR yet marketing strategy. In a tight market like China, a vendor should always keep and possibly increase their brand awareness. This event is one of the best way to do that since Olympic is one of the greatest event, after World Cup of course, for vendor to make a bold statement that they’re not just selling gadget or alike. Yet, they care about China and their patriotism, especially in sport.

Suggestion:

I think Samsung may want to try this to Indian Cricket Team or Indonesian Badminton Team.
