Dell is going to sell smartphones!

It is always great for me as a youngster who want to become an entrepreneur reading any interview which has a relation with the dorm-room super lucky boy, Michael Dell. But wait a minute, do you know him? Hmmm, thanks for your answer. Michael Dell is the founder of Dell, Inc. One of the largest PC and Server manufacturer yet seller in this world. In 2008, they’re the world second largest computer seller under US giant, HP.

As we might recognize it in general, Dell is popular to be a big seller for personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, computer peripherals and televisions. Sooner or later, the list will about to sum up again. With what?

Dell is going to sell smartphone!

Yes this one is not yet official actually. But a slice of sentence from its CEO itself in an interview with Om Malik is a great signal to step forward of course.

Here are some words from Michael Dell that may strengthen this almost-official statement.

Om Malik:

It is actually a complementary device (mobile internet device). But I think the bigger opportunity is in buying those devices because they can be replaced every six months.

Dell:

No question, this is a large and significant opportunity and…I think you will see Dell move in that direction. But I think it will be sequenced in the right order relative to all the opportunities we have.

Om Malik:

What do you think is the biggest opportunity for Dell?

Dell:

We have identified five big opportunities. When I say big, I’m talking about $5 billion to $10 billion each in terms of scale opportunities. They are the consumer business, mobile computers, emerging countries, enterprise, and small/medium business. We have reorganized the company around these key priorities.

When the time it’s going to jump in?

Michael Dell said that he still watching the mobile phone arena and he couldn’t expect to launch anything soon.

On Symbian and Android mobile OS

Hey, what about Apple iPhone? No way! Michael Dell and Steve Jobs is somewhat Tom and Jerry. They are just never get so close to each other. Ha … ha .. ha … such a classical silicon valley roman.

But let’s back to the topic first. When Om Malik asked him whether he would prefer to use Nokia’s Symbian or Google’s Android, Michael Dell just answered:

We’re not ready to publicly disclose our plans there…we’re working on that.

Hmmmm, this looks promising. Hewlett Packard, Dell #1 competitor has already hit the market with their iPaq series for a quite long time. And now, I think Dell is better to get and jump into the wagon too. Our future laptop is pretty much looks like our current mobile phone now. Am I right?
