Has virus became a threat for our mobile phone?

Sarah Perez from ReadWriteWeb has written an interesting post about virus for mobile web. She cited that:

AdaptiveMobile had stats provided by one major mobile operator who preferred to not be named. That mobile operator has seen a rise in attacks from 0.5% of all messages to 6% over the last 12 months. On average, this mobile operator sees 100,000 virus incidents per day - up from 70,000 only one year ago.

Wow, I said it must be a lot of number. I have never thought that mobile phone viruses have increased that much. I know that most viruses came to Symbian-based phone (like in Nokia), since like PC in computer world, they are now the majority in global market.

Yet, I recognize that most viruses currently are not transferred from mobile web (using any browser), but from Bluetooth transfer file. Many common people don’t know the setting of their Bluetooth profile. Some people let his Bluetooth setting to be “Always ON” or “discoverable”, which is very vulnarable and will attract anyone-in Bluetooth radius area-to do anything, including delivering file contains viruses.

For preventive action, I would like to suggest these several items that will keep you “quite save” from mobile phone viruses threat:

  • If you don’t familiar with advanced mobile phone technology and only use it for calling and text messaging, buy the cheap one, without any connectivity with external side. This action will guarantee your mobile phone to be saved from any threat
  • If you have savvy phones, always make sure that your Bluetooth profile is always OFF. Just turn it on when you need to transfer file for/from your known buddies. Turn it off right away after the business has done
  • Never accept any file sent by stranger (which can be delivered via any connection device)
  • Never open any unknown site link. We don’t know what will happen, what will be downloaded by our browser, so please make sure you only open authorized (or well recognized) sites
  • Protect your phone with antivirus. This action will not give you 100% protection guarantee, but at least we try to prevent any harm-which successfully enter the phone-from causing more damages

Virus is definitely a threat for our mobile phone, but we certainly able to minimise the risk by preventing it as soon as possible.
