Serious J2ME bugs on Series 40 handsets

After virus, what could infect your J2ME-powered cellphone next? While you’re thinking seriously about the answer, Adam Gowdiak may already has it on his research document though.

And here is an excerpt from his sixth-month research via CW.

The flaws can be used by attackers to force-feed malicious Java applications to Nokia Series 40 phones, said Gowdiak. Those applications, in turn, could be crafted to conduct all kinds of mischief, including making phone calls from the phone, sending text messages from the phone, and recording audio or video. Hackers could also access any file on a Nokia 40 model phone, obtain read-and-write access to its contact list, access its SIM card and more, added Gowdiak.

In addition to this, this Polish guy also said that he had identified 14 security issues with the Nokia Series 40 handsets. This could be a horrible fact for Nokia since this series is also to be the world’s most widely used mobile platform. Guess what? There are about 100 million devices are count on it. Very big isn’t? Some of them are the latest handset by Nokia such as Supernova series, XpressMusic, 7070 Prism, N6600, N3600, etc.

Is Gowdiak such a black hat or what?

What made this research has become so intriguing is probably because the way Gowdiak treat his research document itself. Instead releasing it publicly, he has decided to sell it online via his site, security-explorations.com.

And the price isn’t cheap though. Both Nokia and Sun Microsystem or anybody who are interested to own it have to pay about €20,000 for each copy of this document.

Hmmm, can you accept Adam Gowdiak’s style on this issue?
