HSBC is looking for 200.000 iPhones. Serious?
Would you believe this? There is a big company with 300.000 employees around the world is looking for a piece of gadget that could change their way in communicating to each other. That company is HSBC.
Currently, HSBC employees or staffs are using the famous Blackberry devices. The superiority and popularity of its push email functionality has made some of large scare companies choose RIM’s Blackberry over other devices as the main gadget for their daily communication business. Apple iPhone was no exception on this issue.
But that was a year go, in 2007 – iPhone 2G’s debut. Now, the landscape might be changed since Apple has injected the same powerful support to handle this email business on their 3G.
Brenton Hush Statement
HSBC’s Australia and New Zealand chief information officer, Brenton Hush seems want to be the iPhone’s hero. Yeah, I am not kidding here. Recently, he has told ZDNet’s Liam Tung that they were reviewing iPhone as their next standard smartphone device.
“We are actually reviewing iPhones from a HSBC Group perspective … and when I say that, I mean globally.”
“A decision on a piece of hardware like that would potentially be deployed, conservatively, to 200,000 people,” said Hush. “You know, it’s a big decision, especially when you have an existing fleet out there.”
“But it’s definitely something we are considering from a HSBC Group perspective,” he said. “We always explore the potential application of new technologies and this is no different.”
Pay attention on this, he thought that the BlackBerry had no any advantage over the iPhone.
No, I don’t. I think [the iPhone] would change some underlying infrastructure considerations from an enterprise perspective. But [Apple] have been pretty smart with the design.”
Calm down RIM
Though this issue could be a nightmare for Canadian’s RIM, I still wonder that such a switch like this is always definitely hard to be accepted. One commentator in this ZDNet’s post has given us a critic on this issue. And I absolutely won’t deny him. Here is the comment.
This guy admits he
a.) doesn’t own an iPhone
b.) hasn’t even been in an Apple store
Yet he has “hands on experience”. Try using an iPhone for longer than 30 seconds. You don’t switch over 300,000 employees on a new platform without deploying it to a small group first, then getting feedback from that group.
Seems pretty logical right? I think big company like HSBC should test this iPhone’s environment on some of small groups first. Cause if it won’t, then they may get a trouble on their system.
Congratulation to Apple
For RIM, I can only said that losing about 200.000 subscribers is not really that bad if you had already million of customers. Anyway, for Apple, this decision of course can give them a signal of great achievement.. In less than a year from its debut on June 2008, they have already shaken the landscape of smartphone. Great job from Apple’s Team!
