Infineon chip cause 3G connection problem in iPhone 3G?

One of key factor that made iPhone 3G scored a huge success is the availability of 3G/HSDPA connection. It doesn’t exist in previous iPhone model. Yet, many users have complained about the stability of iPhone’s 3G connection and even in good 3G range area, the phone tends to revert to slower EDGE connection.

Richard Windsor from Nomura wrote in research note that the problem will likely involved 3G connection chip, made by German’s Infineon. He said:

We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain that Infineon is the 3G supplier. There are too many instances on iPhone blogs and Apple’s own website for it to be coincidence. Furthermore, it is not just the U.S. but other countries as well.

Infineon spokesman refused to answer regarding this issue, but he noted that Infineon has served 3G chips for Samsung handsets with no problem at all. AT&T spokesman supports this counter by saying that they receive very few complaints regarding 3G connection. So far it works well

So, who’s going to be blamed for this problem? I think Apple needs to figure out how bad exactly the problem goes and find the true cause root.
