Nokia bought Samsung stake on Symbian for $410 M
The race in Symbian saga is over - sort of - after Samsung agreed to sell its stake on Symbian OS to Nokia for about $410 M. In a response to this breaking news, I just love what Ubergizmo said in their post about this. They said that:
Now, we can speculate on what happened: it might mean that Samsung doesn’t believe that Symbian can hold Apple and Windows Mobile off in the longer term.
Well, sure I love that opinion. But still, I have my own view on this case. The decision that has been taken by Samsung to sell its stake is merely not because it doesn’t believe Symbian anymore or even because they want to create their own OS. No, I don’t think so!
Focus!
Here, I personally would love to predict that Samsung is just trying to reach something that is more important than this; focus on handset manufacturing. To date, there are a lot of choices in mobile OS that hit the market, whether it is licensed using open source style or not. Hence, as one of the best brand in this field, they’re trying to open themselves to all mobile OS out there. And this is why perhaps we are often witnessing that this Korean largest cellphone manufacturer is always joining and sit on the board of mobile OS consortium or foundation.
Shortly speaking, putting itself as a consumer in this field - rather than trying to become a producer as Nokia used to show us - will give Samsung more option to pick the best mobile OS out there that work best with their handset and target market.
Bravo Samsung!
