India adds 6.3 million new GSM subscribers last month

Just a quick note for the latest India’s mobile statistics. The country has now reached 225.6 million GSM users!

India’s GSM subscriber based (excluding Reliance Telecom) added 6.3 million new subscribers in August according to statistics from the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI). The total for the country has now reached 225.6 million.

Bharti Airtel is recorded as being the largest operator in the country - with a subscriber base of 74.7 million, while Vodafone Essar took second spot with 52.75 million - representing a market share of 23.4%. BSNL came third with 38.48 million subscribers. Fourth place went to Idea with 29.3 million customers and fifth place went to Aircel with 13.1 million.

Another recent report said, India along with other BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries is likely to become home to over 1.7 billion mobile users by 2012 driven by emergent middle class, with 680 million users expected to be addicted to net surfing through their handsets. Out of the 1.7 billion expected subscribers in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) nations, India is likely to have 560 million mobile users, while China is expected to top the chart with 800 million, a report by eMarketers said.
