iPhone 3G’s sales in India: below expectation

India is actually an exciting market. With huge number of population, India definitely a potential place to gain lot of cash, beside China and Indonesia. But to be honest, the difference between the riches and poors are like heaven and hell. Huge gap out there. That’s why when iPhone is being released in India, I don’t think it will grab a great success. Some definitely will buy it, but in other hand, many people are still sufferring for eating.

Do you know how much price is iPhone 3G in India? The cheap one, 8GB version, will cost you around US$ 700! It must be a living cost for few months for certain people! So, it is no wonder that the sales is not quite impressive. Compared to internal goal to move 100.000 units by December 2009, there are “only” 10,000 units (10% from target) sold so far, with one year to go. Next year, there must be a lot of sexy gadgets to be released, which means harder to reach the target.

What Apple should do to boost the sales is definitely lowering the price. As most people know that the actual price, in the US, is US$ 199 (with contracts). How cruel Apple India to sell it four times more expensive to country with much lower gross income to compare to US citizen. FYI, typical IT worker’s salary there per year ranges from US$ 12,000 to US$ 24,000.

Another step is by focusing the sales to numerous specific branches with potential. iPhone is a lifestyle phone, not an ordinary phones they use in the street. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone seems didn’t have experience on aggressively selling the handset. Until now, Nokia has dominated the Indian market with 70% share, seems most of the cake comes from low-end phones.
