Nokia reaffirms commitment for TD-SCDMA network in China

One uniqueness of comm network in China is the country using different technology called TD-SCDMA. An official 3G telecom standard, TD-SCDMA is used to be independent from any Western influence, although the implementation was assisted by German’s Siemens (now NSN). For more technical highlights about TD-SCDMA, please refer to its Wikipedia page.

For sure, China is the largest market for mobile penetration, due huge amount of population. Therefore, most mobile manufacturers will try to comply with China regulation, in order for having better market share.

Nokia, world’s leading manufacturer, don’t want to miss the carriage. The Finn company has started the development of TD-SCDMA device based on Symbian’s S60. The product is planned to be launched by the end of next year. This phone is fully supported by local network operator, like China Mobile:

“We are very excited to hear Nokia’s announcement today. Symbian OS is a mature and leading global mobile device platform, and we believe that the Nokia TD-SCDMA device will enhance our application offerings and user experiences,” said Mr. Wang Jianzhou, Chairman and CEO of China Mobile. “We look forward to working together with Nokia to further drive TD-SCDMA development in China.”

Currently, China market is conquered by local products and US’ Motorola. Although, low-end Nokia products are also popular there, seems like Nokia hasn’t won mid to high-end level product, thanks to this independent 3G network. Will Nokia ever succeed on planning its move?
