Japan’s KDDI to build LTE as its 3.9G

Japan’s second largest operator, KDDI, finally announced that the company will use LTE (Long Term Evolution) as its 3.9G (not yet 4G) mobile communication. The vendor for network equipment is Hitachi Ltd.

KDDI said it decided to employ LTE in consideration of its “cost and versatility,” “future expandability,” and “international trends.” Hitachi will develop LTE products in cooperation with Nortel Networks Ltd of Canada.

What Hitachi will develop includes MME (Mobility Management Entity), S-GW (Serving Gateway), P-GW (PDN Gateway) and PCRF (Policy and Charging Rules Function) as well as other core network nodes, network devices and O&M devices for supervision and control.

The MME technology, which is used to control mobility for seamless transfer between base stations, will be developed jointly with Nortel Networks Corp. Overall system integration will be handled by Hitachi. Hitachi Communication Technologies Ltd, Hitachi’s wholly-owned subsidiary, will actually develop the products.

KDDI is a CDMA network provider, thus this move most likely will trigger the use of LTE technology to become the one and only 4G technology standard in the world. Currently there are numbers of 3G standard, including UMTS, CDMA2000, and TD-SCDMA (China’s network).
