R.I.P: UIQ
A sad news comes from User Interface maker which once was very potential on conquering smartphone world. UIQ, currently owned by Sony Ericsson and Motorola, has filed bankruptcy in Sweden. The reason most likely due to financial global crisis and inability to produce new UI. Sony Ericsson as the long time supporter of the OS has moved to Windows Mobile for its new line, Xperia.
UIQ historically was initiated by Ericsson, especialized in touchscreen OS. The first phone ever used the UIQ-as I remembered-was Sony Ericsson P800 in around 2002. It was a huge hit at that time, compared to Symbian’s Nokia 7650. UIQ kept continuing on supporting Sony Ericsson and Motorola phones (although not as success as Sony Ericsson’s) until Sony Ericsson P1. Unlikely, the inability to produce better interface brings UIQ to the deadpool.
There is no official release from the company, although the story has spread over the Internet. Rest in Peace, UIQ.
