Philippines’ Smart Offers New 3G Services

The Philippines's leading wireless services provider Smart Communications Inc. unveiled new 3G service offerings and announced the commercial rates for its 3G cellular service. Starting May 1, Smart postpaid and prepaid subscribers with 3G-capable handsets will enjoy enhanced applications and extensive rich media content on a commercial basis. These include live TV streaming of two major television networks and 3G downloads of full music tracks and video clips. With 800 cellsites covering 119 key cities and municipalities, Smart offers genuine nationwide 3G coverage. Canada’s Bell Expands 3G Network

Just like mostly other coutries in the American continent, Canada expanded 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network. The country’s second largest cellco Bell Mobility has expanded the network to cover Ottawa, Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville, alongside a new roaming agreement with Aliant to provide its users with EV-DO services in Halifax. 3G: India to Outpace Japan Soon

A recent study projects that by 2010, India will have 21.3 million 3G users (11 per cent of the mobile lines). Within two years, India will take over Japan to become the third largest mobile market in the world after China and the US, says the recent Confederation of Indian Industry report titled, "Enabling India's Broadband Economy - The 3G Way", conducted in partnership with the research firm, The Yankee Group. KDDI Selects Axalto for 3G CDMA Card Launch

Axalto announced that it has launched the first third generation CDMA User Identification Module (UIM) commercial card in Japan with KDDI. The Axalto cards are designed to work together with KDDI’s CDMA 2000 EV-DO third generation mobile handsets. With the Axalto UIM card, KDDI offers increased transaction security, and delivers portability ease for Japanese mobile users. KDDI subscribers can now access both GSM and CDMA networks with just one card, and users will be able to use the same telephone number both domestically and internationally. China Anticipates Boom in 3G Subscribers

The number of 3G (third-generation) mobile subscribers is expected to grow quickly in China, despite getting off to a relatively slow start, according to a telecommunications research firm in Beijing. China will have 5.5 million 3G subscribers within the first 12 months that these services are available, according to Norson (Hong Kong) Information Technology, in Beijing. That number will grow quickly, rising to 21.9 million by the end of the second year and hitting 84.2 million by the end of the third year, Norson said. China is the world's largest market for mobile services, with more than 404 million subscribers at the end of February, according to China's Ministry of Information Industry. 3G CDMA in Japan Continues to Grow

The third generation (3G) technology in Japan continues to grow. More than 50 percent of cellular subscirbers in Japan are 3G CDMA now, a senior manager Qualcomm told Asia Tech recently. According to Takayuki (Ted) Nozaki, Senior Manager Business Development Qualcomm Japan, as of end of February, number of 3G CDMA subscribers of each carrier was as follows: NTT DoCoMo WCDMA: 22,015,000, KDDI 1x/1xEV-DO: 21,159,600 and Vodafone WCDMA : 2,736,200.
