Qualcomm jumps on China 3G expectations

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM.O: Quote, Profile , Research) shares jumped more than 4 percent on Tuesday after China said it may grant a license for a next-generation cellphone network that would boost royalties to the wireless technology and chip supplier. Qualcomm shares rose $1.61, or 4.3 percent, to $38.99 in early afternoon trade on Nasdaq. Ed Snyder, an analyst at Charter Equity Research, said news that China may soon roll out its first third-generation telecoms network -- which allows faster Internet speeds and streaming video -- helped push up Qualcomm shares. 3G coming to Libya

Libya is set to get its first 3G network, with the country’s second largest cellular operator Libyana rolling out a W-CDMA and HSDPA network covering 14 cities. Libyana has contracted ZTE of China to supply its 3G infrastructure. The new network will have an initial capacity of one million lines. State-owned Libyana had around 700,000 subscribers and a 40% share of the market at the end of June. Link

Homegrown 3G tech trial begins

A two-month trial of China's third generation mobile technology will begin on either Sunday or Monday in Beijing, Shanghai and three other cities in China, Sina.com reported today. TD-SCDMA, time division-synchronous code division multiple access, was developed in China and is one of the world's three next-generation mobile standards. Initially, the trial TD-SCDMA network will involve 20,000 users in Shandong Province's Qingdao City, Hebei Province's Baoding City and Xiamen City in Fujian Province. They will use new cell phone numbers beginning with 188 or 199 in the trial. Infineon, Panasonic team up for dual-mode 3G phone

Infineon Technologies AG announced that its GPRS/UMTS multimedia platform will power Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd's newest Softbank 705P mobile handset. The Softbank Mobile Corp. handset will be for the Japan market. Infineon's scalable Multimedia Platform EDGE/UMTS (MP-EU) allows mobile phone manufacturers to introduce various UMTS models based on the same core architecture, reducing design cycles and cutting time-to-market. It has all necessary hardware and software components of a mobile handset. Malaysia’s Maxis to invest RM2b on 3G

Malaysia's biggest mobile firm, Maxis Communications Bhd, will spend a total of RM2.2 billion over the next three years to expand its third generation (3G) network and wireless broadband Internet services. The company expects a break- even period of about three years. Maxis aims to make broadband available to three quarters of all households by 2010. At the end of June, there were more than 650,000 broadband subscribers. Chief executive officer Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim said plans are to invest RM1.5 billion for the next three years, starting in 2007, to expand 3G coverage to more than 60 per cent of the population by 2009. Vietnam’s 3G to be licenced in 2007

Vietnam will follow its ASEAN partners to launch 3G services. The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) is checking technical standards to prepare for the issuance of a regulation on using frequency bands for the 3G network. The MPT plans to issue a business licence to the first firm that meets conditions to offer 3G services next year. Doan Quang Hoan, Director of MPT’s Wireless Frequency Department, revealed that the policy on licencing 3G network services had been considered for a long time. Globe Telecom in Philippines deploys Nokia MSC Server

Mobile softswitch ideal to combine 2G and 3G services. Nokia has signed a nationwide supply contract with the Philippine telecommunications company Globe Telecom Inc. This network modernization deal includes an upgrade of the Globe Telecom circuit switched core network, also enabling fixed mobile convergence. Under the agreement Nokia will renew the core network of Globe Telecom including the upgrade of Nokia mobile switching centre into Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch.
