Snow storms in China bring loses for China’s telco companies

Indeed a terrible force majeur, the ongoing snow storms in Southern and Eastern China have caused losses of US$153 million to the telecoms industry, according to statistics from by the Ministry of Information Industry. The industry has allocated around US$70 million to repair damaged infrastructure, and the ministry says that the industry has deployed some 800,000 staff to deal with the crisis. Afghanistan’s Roshan is to launch mobile payment with Vodafone

Afghanistan operator, Roshan, is going to unveil mobile payment service in cooperation with UK giant, Vodafone. Vodafone already built M-PESA that had been implemented in Kenya. Called as M-Paisa in Afghanistan, the service will act mainly as a vehicle for microfinance institutions' (MFI) loan disbursements and repayments, with an additional range of business to business applications such as salary disbursement and airtime distribution.

Telekom Malaysia to increase its share in M1 and XL

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) yesterday proposed to buy shares in Singapore's Mobile One (M1) and Indonesia's PT Excelmindo Pratama (XL) from Khazanah Nasional Bhd for RM1.58billion. The acquisition of the shares in M1, through buying outright the holding company called SunShare Investment that holds a 29.7% block in M1, would allow TM to strengthen its footprint in Singapore.

Indonesia to cut mobile interconnection tariff

One of populous country, Indonesia, plan to cut mobile interconnection tariff 20-40% by 1 April. Indonesia's communication minister, Mohammad Nuh, told reporters that the government expected the number of mobile phone users in Indonesia to rise by 30-40 percent this year from around 80 million at the end of 2007. "We still see a trend of declining tariffs from this year lasting until 2009. The trend needs to be maintained," Nuh said.

Egypt’s Orascom win North Korea telecom wireless service bid

Orascom Telecom, Egyptian telecommunication company, announced that they win a tender of wireless service in North Korea, one most isolated country in the world. Through its subsidiary, CHEO Technology, 75% owned by Orascom and 25% by North Korea's Korea Post and Telecommunication Corp , they will build wireless technology using 3G.

China giant to expand its business

Biggest China telecom operator, China Mobile, plans to expand its business arm abroad. "(China Mobile) would like to acquire high-quality and profit-making telecommunications enterprises overseas," Lei Yu, a spokeswoman of China Mobile's Hong Kong-listed unit. Currently, China Mobile only holds share of one telecom company outside China. buying an 88.86-percent stake in Pakistan's fifth-largest mobile operator Paktel for 284 million dollars in January 2007. Vodafone to invest in Bangladesh

UK's telecom giant, Vodafone, is planning to invest in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, a South Asia country, is one of the most dense populated country. The telecoms company is looking at a number of options including the acquisition of any of the six mobile phone companies now operating in the country. A Vodafone spokesperson in the UK confirmed the company 'is interested in emerging markets with good growth prospects', but would not expand further on the company's plans. Source: CNNMoney

NSN with Indonesian’s Global Mediacom is its biggest mobile TV agreement

Global Mediacom, one of the largest Indonesian media group, agree to adopt Nokia Siemens Network solution on bringing mobile TV to Indonesian commercial world in the first half of 2008. The technology is based on Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) and will be the NSN's biggest mobile TV agreement worldwide.

Samsung vs LG marketing strategy

The two Korean powerhouses, Samsung and LG, apparently have different marketing strategy in gaining market share. While Samsung Electronics has yet to fix the date of its annual "Global Strategic Meeting'' where chief executives of its key local and overseas units gather to discuss business plans, LG Electronics has held its internal meetings as planned.

China Telecom selected NSN to boost MegaEyes service

China Telecom, the leading wireline provider of telecommunications services in China has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) as the primary solutions provider for its video monitoring service, MegaEye. This video monitoring solution is an operator host IP based offering capable of providing high end images for remote monitoring.
