Infineon, Panasonic team up for dual-mode 3G phone

Infineon Technologies AG announced that its GPRS/UMTS multimedia platform will power Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd's newest Softbank 705P mobile handset. The Softbank Mobile Corp. handset will be for the Japan market. Infineon's scalable Multimedia Platform EDGE/UMTS (MP-EU) allows mobile phone manufacturers to introduce various UMTS models based on the same core architecture, reducing design cycles and cutting time-to-market. It has all necessary hardware and software components of a mobile handset. "Infineon and Panasonic have a long track-record of successful cooperation and we are happy to expand our activities by bringing a common dual-mode 3G solution in the market," said Dr. Hermann Eul, management board member and president of communication solutions business group at Infineon. Vietnam’s 3G to be licenced in 2007

Vietnam will follow its ASEAN partners to launch 3G services. The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) is checking technical standards to prepare for the issuance of a regulation on using frequency bands for the 3G network. The MPT plans to issue a business licence to the first firm that meets conditions to offer 3G services next year. Doan Quang Hoan, Director of MPT’s Wireless Frequency Department, revealed that the policy on licencing 3G network services had been considered for a long time. Cellular Reaches 2,5 Billion Lines

BlackBerry goes 3G

This is another new handset challenger in 3G market... Research In Motion (RIM) recently announced its first UMTS-capable handhelds, the BlackBerry 8707g and 8707v, in Singapore. Both models, which essentially offer the same features but with slight differentiation in exterior casing, will be carried by all three local mobile operators. The 8707g will be available from SingTel and StarHub, while the 8707v will be offered by M1. One of the key features of the new BlackBerry handhelds is their ability to multitask.
