Nokia buys Trolltech, Motorola gets headache

Finnish giant, Nokia, agreed to buy the Norwegian software maker Trolltech. Trolltech is the creator of Qt and Qtopia, application framework for Linux based system. Why Nokia buy Linux based software developer, while they have Symbian on their own?

Nokia to close German plant

Due to lack of location competitiveness, Nokia plans to close its German manufacturing and automotive supply unit plant in Bochum. The moves would reduce Nokia's work force by 2,300 positions, or about 2 percent. Currently they are in talk to sell the plant to India's Sasken Technologies.

O2 and Nokia to embed Oyster into mobile phone

UK operator, O2, and phone manufacturer, Nokia, agreed to embed the Oyster swipe card used by London commuters into a mobile phone with a trial set to start next year. The mobile phones will include a built-in RFID chip that allows users to pay for train tickets by swiping the handset over the Oyster card reader.

T-Mobile offers unlocked iPhone

German headquartered operator, T-Mobile agree to sell iPhone in unlocked condition due to court ruling in Germany. This comes shortly after a court granted an injunction requested by Vodafone mandating that T-Mobile either sell an unlocked version of the iPhone or withdraw the product from the market.

3GWeek Rumor: iPhone to be launched with 3G in Europe

Rumor spreads out that iPhone that will be launched in Europe is going to be equipped with 3G. News came from SevenClick, referring to Spanish newspaper El Pais. The newspaper said that Telefonica, Spain biggest operator who also owns O2, will ship iPhone with 3G on May 2008. The release in Spain will take place prior to that in the UK, Germany and France. Fanatic skype software user to communicate long distance freely now can ditch their PC and use handset respectively. The maker has launched its new 3G handset in cooperation with notorious global mobile operator, 3 (Three). It will be sold first in the UK, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden.

Cellphone soon to be allowed in flight

Passengers, especially in Europe, may soon be able to use their cellphone above 3000 meters high. The regulators around Europe call for consultation regarding the introduction of technology. The European Union has recommended to member states that the plan go ahead and space on the airwaves has been reserved for the technology.

BT creates Wi-Fi community

Britain's BT Group has teamed-up with FON to create "the world's largest" Wi-Fi community, adding 3 million consumers to a collective that already includes subscribers to France's NeufCegetel and Time Warner Cable in the United States.

Ofcom offers long-range 3G

This is another third generation (3G) mobile phone spectrum auction in Britain. The auction could come as early as 2009 although it would not be expected to fetch anything like as much as the £22.5bn the Government raised in 2000 by selling five third generation licences.
