Afghanistan’s Roshan is to launch mobile payment with Vodafone

Afghanistan operator, Roshan, is going to unveil mobile payment service in cooperation with UK giant, Vodafone. Vodafone already built M-PESA that had been implemented in Kenya. Called as M-Paisa in Afghanistan, the service will act mainly as a vehicle for microfinance institutions' (MFI) loan disbursements and repayments, with an additional range of business to business applications such as salary disbursement and airtime distribution.

Telekom Malaysia to increase its share in M1 and XL

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) yesterday proposed to buy shares in Singapore's Mobile One (M1) and Indonesia's PT Excelmindo Pratama (XL) from Khazanah Nasional Bhd for RM1.58billion. The acquisition of the shares in M1, through buying outright the holding company called SunShare Investment that holds a 29.7% block in M1, would allow TM to strengthen its footprint in Singapore.

NTT profit drops by 22% - April to Dec 2007

Following the last DoCoMo report, NTT, parent company of DoCoMo, announced that their profit drops by 22%, period April to December 2007. "As our regional communications businesses will likely suffer for a while, NTT DoCoMo, which is contributing more than 70% of operating profits is really important to us," said Satoshi Miura, Nippon Telegraph's president and chief executive.

China giant to expand its business

Biggest China telecom operator, China Mobile, plans to expand its business arm abroad. "(China Mobile) would like to acquire high-quality and profit-making telecommunications enterprises overseas," Lei Yu, a spokeswoman of China Mobile's Hong Kong-listed unit. Currently, China Mobile only holds share of one telecom company outside China. buying an 88.86-percent stake in Pakistan's fifth-largest mobile operator Paktel for 284 million dollars in January 2007. Vodafone to invest in Bangladesh

UK's telecom giant, Vodafone, is planning to invest in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, a South Asia country, is one of the most dense populated country. The telecoms company is looking at a number of options including the acquisition of any of the six mobile phone companies now operating in the country. A Vodafone spokesperson in the UK confirmed the company 'is interested in emerging markets with good growth prospects', but would not expand further on the company's plans. Source: CNNMoney

Nokia’s Q4 earning is expected to rise

Thanks to powerhouse holiday season in Europe and massive selling of cheap phone in Asia, Finland's Nokia predicts to obtain rises in earning on Q4 sales 2007. Also, struggle situation dealt by US's Motorola increases the market share of his own. Nokia is expected to have sold 130.7 million phones in the quarter, more than its three closest rivals combined, and giving it a market share of 39.5 percent. Nokia is scheduled to release its numbers on Jan. 24 at around 11.00 GMT, with a conference call scheduled for 13.00 GMT. Source: Reuters

Sony Ericsson sold 100 million handsets in 2007

Japan-Swedish manufacturer, Sony Ericsson, which is now rank in number 4 of mobile producer, reported to sell 100 million handsets in 2007. Translated into percentage, now Sony Ericsson holds 9% of market share and plan to take the US market from Motorola. One big contribution made by its Walkman series. Among 145 million music phone sold last year, 57 million were Walkman phones.

Samsung to launch cheap phone

Korean largest mobile manufacturer, Samsung, plans to launch the line up of cheap phone. It will be sold in emerging countries to take the share of mobile industry. One more strategy to beat Nokia. The phones is planned to be offered in India, Southeast Asia, and South America.

Japan’s mobile advertising rises 42% in 2007

Dentsu unveiled their research that Japan mobile advertising was projected to reach US$ 3.4 billion in 2007. It grows 42% compared to previous year. Dentsu tracks online advertising in three areas, search ads, mobile ads and fixed Internet ads such as banner, email, rich media and text advertisements. By 2011, Dentsu estimates that Japan's online ad market value will be $6.8 billion. Source: WebProNews

AT&T on talk to buy Malaysia’s TM International stake

A local newspaper reported that US telecom giant, AT&T, is interested in acquiring a stake in Telekom Malaysia unit, TM International. Late last year, Malaysia's largest telecommunications group said it may bring in a foreign strategic partner for TM International. Source: CNN Money
