DoCoMo 3G Phones Get Windows Media

The third generation (3G) providers in Japan have came to "open war" now. In facing the fast growing of the rival KDDI with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and BREW platform, NTT DoCoMo chooses Windows Media to support their W-CDMA handset. Japan's premier mobile communications company, NTT DoCoMo, provides wireless voice and data communications to tens of millions of subscribers. Optus Considers Free 3G Phones

Optus is preparing to offer free mobile phones to push customers towards its third generation srvice, but hasn't found an appropriate handset or price. The number-two telco has spent $370 million on its 3G mobile network, which gives users faster and cheaper services, but is yet to aggressively push its 2G customers towards it. Earlier this year, almost 500,000 Hutchison mobile subscribers were offered a new free 3G handset as the provider moved to ditch its 2G network. Optus chief executive Paul O'Sullivan said the telco would look to offer free handsets before Christmas. TIPA Chooses Nokia N80 as Best Mobile Imaging

Nokia today revealed that the Nokia N80 multimedia computer has been voted the Best Mobile Imaging Device in Europe 2006 by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), the largest photo and imaging press association in Europe. 3G Phones in Finland Doubled in One Month: Elisa

The number of third generation mobile phones in Finland doubled in the month after new laws took effect on April 1 allowing bundled sales of phones and subscriptions, a senior executive at operator Elisa said on Monday. "The number of 3G handsets has doubled in a month, they are now 2 percent of all phones and the churn has come down," Matti Vikkula, Elisa's executive vice president for private customer business, said at Helsinki's MobileMonday technology fair. Mobile operators in Finland had competed fiercely on price for several years, with call costs dropping at the fastest speed in Europe last year, according to research firm Informa. NTT DoCoMo to Invest 640 Bln Yen for 3G Service

NTT DoCoMo Inc plans to invest about 640 bln yen for its third generation (3G) mobile phone FOMA service by the end of the year to March 2007, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing the company president Masao Nakamura. The move is aimed at helping the firm catch up with KDDI Corp, the current leader of 3G phone services, the business daily said. The investment will enable the firm to boost the number of its cell stations by 50 pct to more than 44,000 and it is eyeing a 150 pct increase in subscribers for its FOMA service to 35 mln, the Nikkei said.
