PlayNow is alive and rocking!

Sony Ericsson's new but old PlayNow feature is being completed. Deals with 10 major record labels were announced, adding over five million new, and mostly DRM-free, tracks to the PlayNow arena catalog. Sony Ericsson makes deals with 10 major record labels — including Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, EMI, The Orchard, IODA, The PocketGroup, Hungama, X5 Music, Bonnier Amigo, and VidZone.

Nokia launched Ovi

Finally, in CES Nokia announced its service regarding online service application. Christened as Ovi, which is Finnish of "door", is new suite of applications, allowing user to experience some excellent functionality on the mobile web. A few of the applications include things like Nokia Maps or access to the N-Gage gaming market, but the emphasis on Ovi lies within Nokia's Ovi music store.

Motorola acquired Singapore’s Soundbuzz

For expanding MOTOMUSIC campaign, Motorola acquired Singapore based music download site, Soundbuzz. The price tag for this transaction is not disclosed. The acquisition, which is subject to customary conditions, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008.

LG launched 2 new music phones

Korean manufacturer, LG, launched 2 new phones. Both are categorized as music phones. The first one is Rhapsody LB3300. Another sliding phone, it has touch wheel for music navigation, music lyrics playback capability, and has a special Bluetooth headset set-up, that allows two persons to listen to music simultaneously.

TiVo subscribers can search for music directly from their TiVo box and play anything from Rhapsody's music catalog, which currently contains more than four million songs.

Amazon launches music store

The Dominant Apple iTunes music store could not walk alone anymore. Amazon has launched a beta version of its Amazon MP3 music download store. This service has over 2 million songs from more than 180,000 artists represented by over 20,000 major and independent labels including EMI and Universal Music. These songs can be played on all existing music hardware devices including the iPod, Zune, iRiver, RAZR, NSeries, etc. According to Ed Burnette, the Amazon's music is free from digital rights management (DRM) restrictions, so you can burn it to CD, copy it to your other computers, etc. without having to worry about the content expiring or otherwise becoming unusable in the future.
