Indonesia’s Telkomsel to Launch 3G This Year

PT Telkomsel, Indonesia's leading cellular operator, ready to launch commercial 3G services this year, a Jakarta-based newspaper reported today. During a trial since May last year, Telkomsel performs services such video streaming, video calls and broadband Internet connection. "Development of 3G market was also pushed by economic growth, technology evolution, regulatory, consumer behavior and interoperator competition," said Kiskenda Suriahardja, President Director, Telkomsel, as cited by Koran Tempo Daily. The company has a nationwide network covering about 80% of the population of the fourth most populous country in the world with a population of over 250 million people. Qatar’s Qtel Starts Testing New 3G Service

The third generation (3G) technology already expands to Gulf region. Qatar Telecom has begun testing third generation (3G) service and will commercially launch it in June/July, Qtel chief executive officer, Dr Nasser Marafih has said. Qtel is the exclusive telecommunications provider in Qatar and is one of the largest public companies in the country with around 1,900 employees. Canada’s Bell Expands 3G Network

Just like mostly other coutries in the American continent, Canada expanded 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network. The country’s second largest cellco Bell Mobility has expanded the network to cover Ottawa, Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville, alongside a new roaming agreement with Aliant to provide its users with EV-DO services in Halifax. Fastest Growing 3G in the Philippines

The Philippines would be one of the fastest growing 3G country in Southeast Asia. Smart Communications, a mobile operator in the Philippines which received its 3G operator's licence in December 2005 and became the first 3G operator in the country when it launched W-CDMA services in February 2006, has expanded its 3G network to 60 cities in the country. 3G Network Regulation Rings Telstra Alarm Bells

Telstra will seek Federal Government reassurance that it has no plans to ask the competition watchdog to regulate its new mobile phone network. Australia's Communications Minister Helen Coonan was yesterday quoted as saying Telstra would not be allowed to shut its CDMA mobile network, used in regional areas, until its third-generation (3G) network was operational. Whether it was fully operational would be determined by a "major independent technical audit", Senator Coonan told The Australian Financial Review. Telstra spokesman Rod Bruem said the suggestion of possible Government intervention had triggered "alarm" in Telstra management. No Specific Timetable for China 3G License Issuance: Report

A Ministry of Information Industry official said the government has no specific timetable to issue third generation (3G) mobile technology licenses in China, the China Securities Journal reported. "There is no timetable to issue 3G licenses and no decision has been made on which operator will be awarded," said the MII's vice minister, Lou Qinjian. Lou said the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard remains the only official 3G standard in China, with the rival overseas 3G standards WCDMA and CDMA2000 yet to be approved. China is widely believed to be waiting for its homegrown TD-SCDMA technology to mature before opening up the 3G market to all 3G platforms. [3G!] Source

Pakistan to Introduce 3G

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that the country is making substantial progress in the telecoms sector, with teledensity now at 22 per cent. PTA plans to complete preparatory work for 3G technology within the next six to eight months. Pakistan had some 27 million mobile subscribers at the end of March, according to the PTA. The new Wireless Local Loop (WLL) service has also attracted 600,000 subscribers. The PTA said that new telecoms players are making a positive impact on the market, bringing a range of telecom services to Pakistan. As the market continues to become more liberalised, telcos are beginning to introduce new technologies. [3G!] Source
