Burma blocks Internet, cuts off phones

As soldiers in Burma, also known as Myanmar, intensified their crackdown on pro-democracy protesters Friday, authorities also went after the Internet and mobile phones that have proven so vital and powerful in documenting the dramatic confrontations.

Turkey postpones 3G licence tender

Turkey's telecommunications regulator has postponed to Sept. 7 a tender for four third-generation phone licences, an official from the Communications Ministry said on Tuesday. Bids had been due by Thursday, and the tender was scheduled for Friday. Source

Pornography Fears Lead to Ban on 3G Mobile Phones

How 3G technology faces the reaction regarding high-quality video of mobile phone which could be a good media for showing, say, a pornography content? Cambodia's prime minister, Hun Sen, yesterday banned the latest generation of mobile phone services in Cambodia to curb the spread of pornography, heeding a request from his wife. Bun Rany recently urged Hun Sen to prohibit the use of 3G phones, which offer features such as high-quality video. In a petition addressed to Hun Sen last week, Bun Rany argued that obscene images could increase the "sexual exploitation of women and children ... that would cast our society as a very dark one." [3G!]
