Ofcom offers long-range 3G

This is another third generation (3G) mobile phone spectrum auction in Britain. The auction could come as early as 2009 although it would not be expected to fetch anything like as much as the £22.5bn the Government raised in 2000 by selling five third generation licences.

India’s 3G policy might be announced soon

The Indian government might announce their much awaited 3G policy soon. This is now possible as the defense ministry has agreed to vacate 40 MHz spectrum by July. Opening of the 3G market in India would enable the mobile service providers to launch high-speed data download and interactive services like video gaming and stock trading. Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary DS Mathur said in a statement: “The 3G policy will come very soon hopefully by the month-end.” Source: Sifybroadband

Vietnam’s 3G to be licenced in 2007

Vietnam will follow its ASEAN partners to launch 3G services. The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) is checking technical standards to prepare for the issuance of a regulation on using frequency bands for the 3G network. The MPT plans to issue a business licence to the first firm that meets conditions to offer 3G services next year. Doan Quang Hoan, Director of MPT’s Wireless Frequency Department, revealed that the policy on licencing 3G network services had been considered for a long time. Five 3G Operators, None is Operating

Indonesia has five 3G licensed-operators. Yes, you got it right: Five. The problem is, none of them is actually operating. Telkomsel, Indonesia’s leading cellular operator, will launch commercial 3G services only later this year. Indosat and Excelcom, two other biggest GSM operators, did some trials in Jakarta last year, but we haven't heard much from them since then. What about the other two operators, Cyber Access Communications and Natrindo Telepon Seluler? Do not expect these new entrants to launch 3G services anytime soon. So far they have no broad existing subscribers, and they operate small coverage of cellular networks only. [3G] This post was originally published in Sarapan Ekonomi

Dialog, which inked plans for a US$150 million two-year expansion drive last week, hopes to offer high-speed Internet access on mobile phones later this year. [3G!] Source: AFP

3G Network Regulation Rings Telstra Alarm Bells

Telstra will seek Federal Government reassurance that it has no plans to ask the competition watchdog to regulate its new mobile phone network. Australia's Communications Minister Helen Coonan was yesterday quoted as saying Telstra would not be allowed to shut its CDMA mobile network, used in regional areas, until its third-generation (3G) network was operational. Whether it was fully operational would be determined by a "major independent technical audit", Senator Coonan told The Australian Financial Review. Telstra spokesman Rod Bruem said the suggestion of possible Government intervention had triggered "alarm" in Telstra management. "The major concern is … it would be left to the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) to regulate access to the network, rather than let Telstra come ...
