Apple will release 3G for upcoming notebooks?

Apple is eyeing the potential of 3G industry. Apple seems intent on jumping into the mobile broadband game, too. The rumor, courtesy of AppleInsider, suggests that Apple is looking for a PCI Express mini-card that could be factory-installed in order to give Apple laptops 3G capability. Apple is being Apple, though, and isn't content to just stuffing a 3G card somewhere in the bowels of a laptop. Instead, they're looking to put it somewhere rather unusual: in the lid. Source

Japan’s NEC eyeing Russian 3G rollout

Japanese telecom equipment maker NEC is willing to participate in rolling out a third generation (3G) mobile network in Russia. Russian operators are reportedly enthusiastic about the offer. According yo Russian IT and Telecommunications Minister Leonid Reiman, NEC had offered an advanced solution dubbed "3.5G". Third generation (3G) is a set of wireless technologies that offer expanded opportunities for high-speed data transfer, including video broadcasting and video calls. Results of a tender for 3G licenses in Russia are to be announced on April 20. The telecoms regulator received applications from 11 operators as of Monday, including bids from Russia's three largest mobile operators - MTS, VimpelCom and MegaFon. Source: Cellular News

Taiwan producers to start shipping 3G PDA phones

3G handsets have potential market in the region. Asustek Computer will begin to ship two 3G handsets to O2 Asia Pacific this month, followed by Quanta Computer and Arima Communications, which will each ship a 3G device to the company, according to market sources. The two models from Asustek are the O2 Xda Zinc PDA phone and the O2 Graphite smartphone, with both models featuring Xscale processors from Marvell and a 2-megapixel built-in camera, said the sources. Quanta will deliver the Atom Life PDA phone to O2 Asia. Infineon, Panasonic team up for dual-mode 3G phone

Infineon Technologies AG announced that its GPRS/UMTS multimedia platform will power Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd's newest Softbank 705P mobile handset. The Softbank Mobile Corp. handset will be for the Japan market. Infineon's scalable Multimedia Platform EDGE/UMTS (MP-EU) allows mobile phone manufacturers to introduce various UMTS models based on the same core architecture, reducing design cycles and cutting time-to-market. It has all necessary hardware and software components of a mobile handset. "Infineon and Panasonic have a long track-record of successful cooperation and we are happy to expand our activities by bringing a common dual-mode 3G solution in the market," said Dr. Hermann Eul, management board member and president of communication solutions business group at Infineon. Globe Telecom in Philippines deploys Nokia MSC Server

Mobile softswitch ideal to combine 2G and 3G services. Nokia has signed a nationwide supply contract with the Philippine telecommunications company Globe Telecom Inc. This network modernization deal includes an upgrade of the Globe Telecom circuit switched core network, also enabling fixed mobile convergence. Under the agreement Nokia will renew the core network of Globe Telecom including the upgrade of Nokia mobile switching centre into Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch. Included are also the unique, multitechnology Nokia NetAct(TM) network and service management solution, Nokia Voice over IP Server, and Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).
