China 3G Faces Challenges Regarding Technology

Posted in: Asia Pacific, 3G

Despite stronger government support in the first three months, China’s home-grown 3G mobile phone standard TD-SCDMA is facing serious challenges in technology trials. The final test stage before commercial use will determine whether the technology can support practical 3G services for about 15,000 users in the cities of Baoding, north China’s Hebei Province, Qingdao, in Shandong Province, and Xiamen, Fujian Province.

As the government develops its policy on 3G licensing and more companies show their support for TD-SCDMA, industry insiders are more optimistic over the China-developed 3G technology. But TD-SCDMA still had many problems to be considered, said Wang Jing, secretary general of TD-SCDMA Forum, adding that applications and operating modes were critical for its successful commercial use.
