No Specific Timetable for China 3G License Issuance: Report

Posted in: Asia Pacific, Network Operator, 3G

A Ministry of Information Industry official said the government has no specific timetable to issue third generation (3G) mobile technology licenses in China, the China Securities Journal reported.

“There is no timetable to issue 3G licenses and no decision has been made on which operator will be awarded,” said the MII’s vice minister, Lou Qinjian.

Lou said the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard remains the only official 3G standard in China, with the rival overseas 3G standards WCDMA and CDMA2000 yet to be approved.

China is widely believed to be waiting for its homegrown TD-SCDMA technology to mature before opening up the 3G market to all 3G platforms. [3G!]
