Nokia Leading the Evolution of 3G: HSPA

Nokia High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) is a cost-effective, high performance solution that helps operators tackle the challenges of providing high speed, quality services with optimized cost of delivery, a senior director Nokia Networks told in a business meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Speaking before Synovate Business Consulting - Breakfast Meeting 2006 in Hotel Mulia today, Arjun Trivendi, Account Director Nokia Networks explained that today’s mobile subscribers are a sophisticated crowd - looking beyond just voice and basic messaging, they want high quality music downloads, streamed video and higher speed connectivity to mobile office and the Internet.

In a new report, mobile industry body The UMTS Forum forecasts that there will be almost one billion active users of HSPA networks by 2012. The new study also anticipates that HSPA will significantly stimulate data ARPUs, generating E56bn in annual revenues for mobile operators by 2012.

Nokia HSPA can be added at minimum cost to an existing Nokia WCDMA platform by simply uploading software - no site visits means virtually no costs. Also Nokia transmission solutions ensure that the service delivery with Nokia HSPA is cost optimized end-to-end. Costs are also kept under control by enhanced Nokia radio resource management functionality, taking full use of an operators’ HSDPA, WCDMA R99 and GSM/EDGE capacity.

Nokia HSPA is made up of two key technologies, HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access), offering breakthrough data speeds theoretically up to 14.4 Mbps in the downlink and up to 3.6 Mbps in the uplink. [3G!]
