Cellphone soon to be allowed in flight
Posted in: Europe, Cell Phone, 3G

Passengers, especially in Europe, may soon be able to use their cellphone above 3000 meters high. The regulators around Europe call for consultation regarding the introduction of technology. The European Union has recommended to member states that the plan go ahead and space on the airwaves has been reserved for the technology.
How does this work? Instead of using regular Base Transceiver Station (BTS), the signal will be transferred using satellite. Then it will be caught by satellite dish and routed to the nearest switching unit of landline or mobile phone. The European Safety Aviation and UK authority are working to ensure that it will be save for the the flight itself.
Airplane flags is currently watching the development closely and monitoring the customer demand. Of course the implementation cost is higher than the one in the ground. UK regulator, Ofcom, said the implementation will be held for 2G network first. If succeed, the future of 3G usage on plane is not a dream anymore.
