Afghanistan’s Roshan is to launch mobile payment with Vodafone

Afghanistan operator, Roshan, is going to unveil mobile payment service in cooperation with UK giant, Vodafone. Vodafone already built M-PESA that had been implemented in Kenya. Called as M-Paisa in Afghanistan, the service will act mainly as a vehicle for microfinance institutions' (MFI) loan disbursements and repayments, with an additional range of business to business applications such as salary disbursement and airtime distribution.

Softbank profit roses as DoCoMo slides down

Japan third largest mobile operator, Softbank, reported that their Q3 2007 profit roses 9.1%. This is a bless as DoCoMo and KDDI profit slides down. Softbank has used a cut-price strategy since buying Vodafone Group Japan mobile unit in 2006 to lure users from bigger rivals NTT DoCoMo Inc and KDDI Corp. In the business year started in April, the newcomer has grabbed more users than its rivals on a net basis, mostly from DoCoMo, which controls more than half of Japan's mobile market. Vodafone to invest in Bangladesh

UK's telecom giant, Vodafone, is planning to invest in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, a South Asia country, is one of the most dense populated country. The telecoms company is looking at a number of options including the acquisition of any of the six mobile phone companies now operating in the country. A Vodafone spokesperson in the UK confirmed the company 'is interested in emerging markets with good growth prospects', but would not expand further on the company's plans. Source: CNNMoney

T-Mobile offers unlocked iPhone

German headquartered operator, T-Mobile agree to sell iPhone in unlocked condition due to court ruling in Germany. This comes shortly after a court granted an injunction requested by Vodafone mandating that T-Mobile either sell an unlocked version of the iPhone or withdraw the product from the market.

SoftBank Japan announced new model

Japan's mobile operator SoftBank unveiled 10 new models to compete with other operator. Among those new models, 7 are coming from Sharp alone. The operator formerly known as Vodafone prepares the collection for winter 2007 when then sales usually raises up during Christmas and Year End.

Mobile WiMax in challenge?

A report, conducted by Arthur D. Little, being published by GSM Association and claimed to shred the business case of mobile WiMax in markets where 3G is already in service. Ericsson, as the WiMax opponent, reckons HSPA will have 20 times as many subscribers as mobile WiMax by 2011. At that time the HSPA is predicted to be used by nearly 600 million users, while mobile WiMax will only gain 20 million subscribers.

Ukrtelecom proposes 3G joint venture with Vodafone

Ukrtelecom is considering a proposal to establish a joint venture with the UK’s Vodafone Group to develop 3G mobile services, reports local online paper rynok.biz. The two companies are reportedly holding negotiations on the possibility of cooperation in the 3G sector. Observers also noted that the Ukrainian mobile sector is already very competitive and that taking a stake in Ukrtelecom, or forming a 3G joint venture with the state-run company, represents the only way for Vodafone to gain entry to the market, where it would also enjoy the status of a 3G monopoly.
