11 ways Android will kick the iPhone’s ass
![]()
Will G1 phone threat the Apple’s iPhone? “Start quaking in your boots, Steve,” Dan Grabham wrote in TechRadar. “Or support some more stuff, up to you.”
According to Grabham, here’s why Android can make its presence felt and could really threaten the iPhone.
- It’s more open.
- It’s got integration with online apps.
- It’s faster, faster, faster.
- Better hardware.
- There’ll be more variants.
- It’ll have Flash.
- It won’t be restricted by Apple’s nuances.
- You can have proper keyboards.
- It’ll have better format support.
- You won’t need to jailbreak.
- Unrestricted apps.

Just one thing that concerns me: doesn’t Google already track our every move on the web? Isn’t this just another way Google will track our every move on our mobile phones? I thought that’s called ’spyware’ in some circles, but maybe I’m wrong.
Don’t get me wrong. I use gmail & gmaps & sometimes their search (though personally I prefer Clusty.com). Still when does it start to be too much info all in one company’s hands?
(Might not be so scary if they hadn’t done away with their ‘Do no evil’ motto, but I understand that particular window dressing has already been taken down.)

I was just wondering, does this phone have hand writing recongnition? what about a stylus? would be very useful!
It becomes very comebersom, typing stuff into small keyboards.. with one hand!!

@ggroovin it’s make sense…

@ggroovin, most use Google anyway, but its not required. There will be alternative browsers, search choices, etc. Its NOT an iPhone, its an open Windows OS, meaning despite needing to log into GMail to use the device, you could use a totally different app for email.
If you’re familiar with Symbian S60, which supports various programming languages, you’ll know that whenever a user has a need, the open source dev community will create a solution, alot of times for free. The iPhone will NEVER be so flexible, which is why the N95 before it trotnced it in global sales. The main feature of the G1 is its open source nature.
I wished I knew why these “Martha Stewart neogeeks” believe the iPhone is a smartphone? No one ditches their laptop for an iPhone like they’ve done with S60 and will do with Android.
The iPhone killed the high end MP3 player. S60 and Android killed the laptop, and wounded the iPhone.

Don’t you think it is a bit weird how we all think in terms of “who will control the market”? This market is SO BIG, why should anyone dominate it? As long as you produce a quality product…
Apple has nothing to fear from Google - it’s Nokia, Sony Ericsson and their ilk that should be quaking in their boots - but only because they haven’t moved on from 1992. The people that brought you the Walkman and the Discman are still making butt-ugly phones with tiny buttons (what is their problem?!), Nokia’s basic line-up hasn’t changed in years and Motorola hasn’t moved on since the stunning Razr (the first gen one).
So far the only one coming even close in design/user-experience to Apple’s iPhone is LG, which is making probably the best quality (hardware-wise, that is) phones in the market. But they are a long way off being an ‘iPhone killer’ and have quite wisely positioned themselves squarely in the camera phone market (it’s no coincidence that the Viewty looks more camera than phone).
While LG has a great OS/user interface, nothing tops Apple’s OS or the simply amazing App Store/iTunes experience. But that’s true in the PC/laptop market as well, isn’t it? No-one is producing as good a touch screen either. Why not? That should be the easy bit, no?
As for the much lauded Blackberry Bold? I have played with one, and it’s a piece of shit. Crappy plastic phone, weird size, badly designed keyboard and… no touch screen???
Still, I like what Google are doing with Amazon - they seem to have learned from Apple. You know what I would like to see? A new Palm OS. Palm was awesome!

Brett, I would like to a new Palm. too. But wondering why it uses Windows Mobile, instead of its own Palm OS…
